Introducing Project 2: Working with Arguments
I use this exercise to practice defining and using the concepts of extending, refining, qualifying, and complicating an argument. The basic idea is to have students in pairs and first write claims; some short and some long. I like to give silly examples: "I think Britney Spears is the greatest musician alive."
Secondly, you have students give their paper to their partner, whose task it is then to _________ (extend, complicate, qualify, or refine) the argument.
A modified, faster version of this lesson plan would be to give them sample arguments from magazines, web articles, etc. and then just have them practice extending, complicating, etc.
