Unit 2 Outline

Homework Assignments for Unit 2 (tentative):

Homework Week 5:

September 21:

  • Read Boyd’s chapter 7: “Literacy: Are Today's Youth Digital Natives?” (found on wiki under “Texts”) – annotate and take notes as necessary

  • Write a reading response of 250-350 words after you read Boyd’s chapter. Include an announcement of what you see as the larger conversation she is responding to, and try to explain (in your own words) what you see as her PRIMARY ARGUMENT. Lastly, address any potential issues with the text that you observed while reading – if you didn’t see any, perhaps consider what you find the weakest move she makes. (Post this response to BB by 11am Monday 9/21

September 23:

  • Research the author, her blog, the publisher, context, the license information, and key references in the text. Go to “Unit 2: Boyd” on the main Wiki to access some of this information – find the rest on your own. Upload your notes on the Discussion Board on BB by 11am 9/23

  • Read TSIS Chapter 14 "What's Motivating This Writer?: Reading for the Conversation"

September 25: Friday is LIBRARY DAY! To prepare:

  • Read Essentials of Argument Chapter 3: “Learning More about Issues: Conducting Research”

  • Thinking about the key terms she uses in her text, consider what you’d like to know more about that she discusses. Prepare a list of search terms that relate to digital literacy and other key terms in her text to be used for the library day

Homework Week 6:

September 28:

  • Read Boyd’s text again

September 30:

  • Micro-chart Boyd’s text/Apply PACES

October 2:

  • Read Supplemental text #1: (TBD)

  • Reading Response about Supp. Text: Summarize the main argument, key points, and explain the connection between that text and Boyd’s. Using the list from the prompt, make your own claim about how the text is related to Boyd.

Homework Week 7:

October 5:

  • Choose Supplemental text # 2 from approved list

  • Micro-chart/Apply PACES to 2nd supplemental text

October 7:

  • Do Question #3 on EoA page 67 – Don’t choose ten sources, but follow the rest of the prompt: Write an annotated bibliography including both the 1st and 2nd supplemental tests, explaining how you plan to use each (discussing the basics about that text and how it connects to Boyd). Post your Annotated Bibliography to Discussion Board

  • Bring your annotated bibliography, all supplemental texts, and notes to class for in-class writing of paper

October 9:

  • Read TSIS Chapter 4 “Yes/No/Okay, But: Three Ways to Respond” and Chapter 5 “And Yet: Distinguishing What You Say from What They Say”

  • Bring your annotated bibliography, all supplemental texts, and notes to class for in-class writing of paper

Homework Week 8:

Week 5: Working with Boyd and Finding Sources

M September 21st

See PPT Lecture for specifics: 5.1 Working with Boyd

  1. Quiz on Boyd text

  2. Group Activity (to be continued in next class)

Divide into six groups and macro-chart your section. Each group should select a secretary – write down short notes that directs class to particular places in text rather than long written answers (except the question, of course) (Approximate time: 15 minutes)

Focus your attention on the following points:

  • Moves the author is making (what is she doing in that section)

  • What information she presents in each section (the topic/focus)

  • Make note of any claims she makes/evidence she uses to support

  • Ask a question about your section (regarding her choices, the things she says, or the claim/evidence

  1. Return to class and go through the text with each group sharing what they’d found in order

W September 23rd

  1. Continue working through Boyd, with each group presenting their findings from the group work last class

(Correction for today – I was ill, so class was canceled and they were instructed via email to do the same work, but independently or in their groups/pairs outside of class – we’ll pick this up again next week and review the text again as a class).

F September 25th

Library Visit

Week 6: Working with Boyd and Outside Sources

M September 28th

  1. Quick Write: Explain the most interesting part of the research you found on Boyd and her text. Include a statement about how this aspect could be helpful or harmful to her argument in the chapter we read. Also include a response about the library visit – Was it helpful? What questions about research do you still have?

  2. Continue working through the claims in the text, sharing the in-class work from Monday 9/21

  3. Discuss the homework from Wednesday 9/23 – Boyd’s audience, her project, main argument, and what they learned from researching her, the text, and the websites and publishing information

W September 30th

  1. Brief overview from last class about the rhetorical situation and a reminder of what they found interesting points from their research on Boyd

  2. Show video(s): “Do Digital Natives Exist?”

  4. Give prompt and explain (complicate, extend, challenge, illustrate, etc.) – give definitions of these terms (will return to later)

  2. Review the terms on the prompt about connecting

  3. Introduce the list of texts they can choose from for the 2nd Supplemental Text

Week 7: Working with Sources/Workshopping

M October 5th
